'We’ve lost someone special' - Deputy British High Commissioner to Ghana pays tribute to Diogo Jota

The Deputy British High Commissioner to Ghana, and Liverpool supported, Keith McMahon, has paid a heartfelt tribute to late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, following the tragic news of the player’s untimely death in a car accident.

The 28-year-old Liverpool star died after his Lamborghini careered off a road in northern Spain.

The Portuguese forward was travelling in the supercar with his fellow footballer brother Andre, 26, who also died in the crash.

“Honestly, I barely followed the news over the weekend because it was so upsetting,” McMahon said.

“First and foremost, my thoughts are with his family, the Liverpool fans, and the entire football world.

“As Ghanaians, and as part of the global community, we know that football is the number one sport in the world, and to witness something so tragic is truly heartbreaking.

“My deepest sympathies go out to his wife, his three children, and his family, his brother’s family (André) and to everyone in the football community. We’ve lost someone very, very special.”

Diogo Jota and his brother Andre were buried in their hometown Gondomar, Portugal on Saturday, June 05.
