The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has commended the National Lottery Authority (NLA) for being the first institution to respond to an appeal for assistance to victims of recent tidal waves in the region.

This, follows the presentation of a cheque for GHS 100,000 by the NLA to the Volta Regional Coordinating Council to support those affected by the disaster.

The Regional Minister expressed gratitude to the Director-General of the NLA, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, and the Authority’s management for their swift intervention.

Mr Gunu noted that the victims, whose livelihoods have been severely disrupted, are currently living in tents. He stated that the funds will be used to provide urgent shelter, food, and clothing for the displaced residents of Agavedzi, Salakope, and Amutsinu.

Mr Abdul-Salam, formally presented the cheque to the Regional Minister, who was accompanied by the Municipal Chief Executive of the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie, as well as some assembly members.

The NLA Director underscored the Authourity’s rapid response to the crisis, highlighting that the support was extended through the Authority’s Good Causes Foundation, which leads its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The NLA Good Causes Foundation, operates under four thematic areas: Health, Education, Youth and Sports Development, and Arts and Culture. It derives its mandate from Section 2(3) of the National Lotto Act, which empowers the NLA to conduct lottery operations aimed at supporting individuals with physical or mental disabilities, the needy, the elderly, orphans, and destitute children.

“We have seen the devastation the tidal waves have caused in these communities, and that is why, when the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, through the Regional Minister, appealed to the NLA for support, we prioritised it. We believe our contribution will provide immediate relief to these displaced families and support them in this time of need,” Mr Abdul-Salam said.

Mr Worclachie, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South, also expressed deep appreciation to the NLA for the kind gesture, describing it as a timely intervention that will have a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected.
