Victoria Bright urges Constitutional Review Committee to address flaws in Article 146 if necessary

Chartered legal practitioner and entrepreneur, Victoria Bright, has called for a review of Article 146 of the Constitution.

According to her, stakeholders must take full advantage of the ongoing constitutional review process to review notable flaws in its operation.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Ms Bright stressed the importance of adhering to the provisions of Article 146 as it currently stands, while recognising the urgent need to address its practical shortcomings.

“We should stick to what Article 146 said, and if we are not happy about the way it operates and we all have seen the flaws in the operation of this particular article luckily, we have a constitution review policy going on now,” she stated.

She further urged that concerns surrounding the article be submitted to the relevant review committee for thorough examination and reform.

“We need to place it before the committee so that they will look into it with more detail and fix the gaps in its operation,” she added.

Article 146 outlines procedures for the removal of certain public officers, including judges of the superior courts, and has, over the years, drawn public scrutiny due to ambiguities in its implementation.
