The University of Ghana has refuted circulating rumours that official university events have been cancelled due to a recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases within the tertiary institution’s jurisdiction.

In a statement released today, June 26, the university management clarified that the current restrictions apply solely to student social activities, not official university functions.

This follows growing concern sparked by a health advisory from the University Health Services Directorate, which warned of rising COVID-19 infections within the university community.

“Management wishes to clarify that the restriction on social gatherings pertains solely to student activities,” a statement released by the University of Ghana Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah, emphasised, referencing an earlier notice from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs that suspended all student-organised social events.

Reassuring the university community, management confirmed that all official events will proceed as planned, with appropriate health and safety protocols firmly in place.

These include an inaugural lecture scheduled for today, Thursday, June 26, and the grand finale of the 2025 Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA) on Friday, June 27.

To ensure the safety of all participants, the university has urged strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and physical distancing, especially in indoor spaces.

“Management encourages all members of the university community to comply fully with the prescribed COVID-19 safety guidelines during their participation in these events,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its commitment to health and academic continuity, the University stressed that it remains focused on protecting students, staff, and visitors while ensuring that institutional activities proceed without disruption.

Management also cautioned against misinformation and advised the public and campus community to rely only on official communication channels for accurate updates.
