For such countries, every strata of society is impacted by rising gasoline prices, from huge corporations to low-income people.

Some African countries have maintained high gasoline costs in recent months, given that the average cost of fuel has remained at the same level for two months now.

This of course raises concerns about the potentially far-reaching effects, for countries that would benefit greatly from a drop in energy costs.

Pricey fuel has social and political ramifications that can worsen misery and impede growth, in addition to its economic weight.

One of the most apparent effects of high fuel prices is an increase in the cost of living, via a spike in transportation.

Higher transportation costs immediately lead to higher food and commodity prices, as items become more expensive to carry from farms to markets and warehouses to retailers.

High gasoline costs put additional economic hardship on consumers and limit buying power in nations already dealing with inflation.

Outside of inflationary pressure, fuel hikes have sometimes sparked protests in various African nations, particularly when they occur after the elimination of subsidies or currency devaluation.

Citizens view increasing gasoline prices as a direct sign of government success, particularly when there are no supporting social programs to mitigate the impact.

With that said, here are the African countries with the highest fuel prices in April 2025, according to Global PetrolPrices.

The global average price of gasoline stood at 1.25 USD, as of 7th of April, 2025, compared to 1.26 U.S. Dollar per liter last month.

Compared to the top 10 list last month, Central Africa Republic, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon, recorded increases in fuel prices, despite the drop in the global average price of gasoline.

While Malawi, Ivory Coast, and Seychelles all saw a reduction in fuel costs.

Guinea and Sierra Leone are new additions to the list this month, ousting Morocco and Cape Verde.
