The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) is charting a new course for the future of pensions in Ghana, with a bold push toward greater transparency, improved employer engagement, and enhanced digital services.
Speaking at the Employers’ Breakfast Meeting on July 16, 2025, Director General, Mr Kwesi Afreh Biney, outlined SSNIT’s vision of a stronger, more inclusive social security system powered by innovation and collaboration.
The event, attended by business leaders, members of the Ghana Employers’ Association, and the media, formed part of SSNIT’s broader strategy to build stronger partnerships with stakeholders.
According to Mr Biney, regular engagement ensures that all parties remain aligned with the Trust’s long-term goals and helps shape a more sustainable and resilient pension system.
One of the Trust’s key focus areas is improving compliance. Over the past five years, SSNIT has steadily raised employer compliance from 60% to nearly 80%.
The next milestone, Mr Biney noted, is achieving a 90% compliance rate by the end of 2026.
“Through education, engagement, and digital convenience, we are creating an environment where compliance is easier and more accessible,” he said.
“This is not just about enforcement but it’s about partnership for the greater good of contributors and pensioners.”, he stressed.
To support this drive, SSNIT is investing in cutting-edge digital platforms designed to simplify the registration, payment, and customer service processes for employers.

Mr Biney, emphasized that the Trust is not merely going digital but it is transforming into a service-centered organization that brings value to both employers and contributors.
A major innovation is the planned launch of a fully operational virtual branch by September 2025.
Unlike current digital systems that rely on follow-ups from physical departments, the virtual branch, according to Mr Biney will offer real-time support from trained personnel, ensuring swift responses and a smoother user experience.
“This is about bringing SSNIT to your doorstep whether by phone, USSD, or internet,” Mr. Biney explained.
“We want employers and members to have full access to our services anytime, anywhere.”, he reteirated.
The Trust is also enhancing its transparency mechanisms.
Members now receive quarterly statements and are encouraged to check for any discrepancies or missing contributions.
“SSNIT is fostering a culture where contributors actively participate in safeguarding their future benefits”, he noted .
According to Mr Biney, compliance monitoring is conducted monthly, allowing SSNIT to identify and support employers who may be falling behind.
Legal enforcement, he explained is used only as a last resort with dialogue and support being the first response to non-compliance.
Echoing the Director General’s sentiments, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Employers’ Association, Mr Alexander Frempong, pledged continued support for the Trust’s efforts.
He called on employers to take voluntary compliance seriously and to embrace SSNIT’s new digital tools.
“The world is moving digital, and SSNIT is leading the way in making it easier for businesses to do the right thing,” Mr Frempong said.
“This is a partnership, and we all have a role to play.”, he added.
He further highlighted the importance of ensuring that contributions are made on time, and employees are registered promptly to guarantee the sustainability of the Trust and the welfare of pensioners.
