The Oti Regional Public Health Officer, Ms. Veronica Kakah, has strongly advocated for the provision of Intrauterine Device (IUD) insertion kits to enhance family planning services in the region.
She emphasised the urgent need for these essential medical supplies, which are crucial for promoting reproductive health services among the populace and particularly empowering women to make informed choices about their family planning options.
Ms. Kakah led a two-day training workshop on capacity building for Family Planning Service Providers (FPSP) of health facilities in the Oti Region, focused on data capturing and management in the Nkwanta South Municipality.
The workshop brought together Community Health Nurses (CHNs), Midwives, and Health Information Officers (HIOs) from the Nkwanta South Municipality, Krachi East, and Nkwanta North districts.
In today’s data-driven healthcare landscape, Ms. Kakah stressed that the availability of accurate, timely, and comprehensive data is fundamental to the success of health programmes, particularly in the Family Planning (FP) space.
She noted that reliable data supports evidence-based decision-making, ensures efficient resource allocation, and facilitates the monitoring and evaluation of service delivery outcomes.
Despite its importance, many FPSPs struggle to maintain high-quality data due to various systemic and operational challenges.
The two-day training workshop, supported by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), was aimed at strengthening the competencies of FPSP in data collection, reporting, and utilisation.
The general objectives of the
workshop were to build the capacities of the participants in accurate and timely data capturing techniques, enhance their understanding of data validation and its utilization for service improvement, improve the completeness and timeliness of FP data at both the facility and district levels as well as reinforcing the use of data for planning, supervision, and accountability.
Ms. Kakah urged the government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), and other institutions in the health space to prioritise the procurement and distribution of these essential kits.
This, according to her, would go a long way to significantly reduce unintended pregnancies and also improve the overall health indicators and outcomes in the region.
Addressing the participants, Hon. Joseph Awal Antwi, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, expressed his support for Ms. Kakah’s appeal.
He acknowledged the critical role that family planning plays in sustainable development in the health space and assured participants that the government would explore every means possible to secure the necessary resources to meet the growing demand for IUDs and other family planning resources in the Municipality in particular and the Region as a whole.
