NPP denies contract with Ukrainian firm over alleged smear campaign

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly denied allegations that it engaged a Ukrainian public relations firm, Brandcom, to run an online smear campaign during Ghana’s 2024 presidential election.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, the party dismissed a recent report by AllAfrica.com, which claimed that Brandcom was demanding $280,000 from the NPP for services related to an alleged disinformation campaign. The article, published on July 31, was titled: “Ukrainian PR Agency Demands $280,000 From Ghana’s NPP for Online Smear Campaign.”

“The NPP has no contractual relationship, past or present, with any entity known as Brandcom, based in Ukraine or elsewhere,” the party stated. “The claims in the article are completely false, baseless, and defamatory.”

According to the release, the party maintains that it has never authorized, instructed, or collaborated with any foreign agency to operate fake social media accounts or produce unethical campaign content. The NPP emphasized that its campaigns are rooted in “integrity, policy, and a commitment to the democratic process.”

The statement further described the publication as a “deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the party and sow public distrust.” The NPP is demanding an immediate retraction of the article and has threatened legal action against both Brandcom and any media outlet that republishes what it calls “unsubstantiated allegations.”

The party reaffirmed its focus on building a prosperous Ghana through “bold, transparent, and ethical leadership,” and urged media institutions and the public to be vigilant against misinformation from anonymous sources aimed at discrediting legitimate political actors.

The release was signed by the National Communications Directorate of the NPP.
