Every great investor I have studied comes up with one important BIG IDEA in their career. The investor spends decades trying to express the BIG IDEA over and over again in a variety of ways.

Warren Buffett’s BIG IDEA was to buy companies and assets for less than they were worth. Pretty simple idea, but one that allowed Buffett to create an insane investing track record. In fact, this one BIG IDEA may have made Buffett the best investor of our lifetime.

Carl Icahn and his corporate raider peers had the BIG IDEA to use activism to influence company operations with an eye on improving financial performance. That single idea helped Icahn create $4+ billion of value for himself and his family.

Masayoshi Son’s BIG IDEA was to bet big and bet early on transformative technologies. This strategy proved highly lucrative as he made massive investments in companies that pioneered different sectors of technology. Masa even was the richest person on earth for a period of time.

Steve Cohen’s BIG IDEA was to build a multi-strategy, research-driven hedge fund that combines multiple teams of traders and diverse analytical approaches. Now Cohen owns the Mets and has built a multi-billon dollar net worth for himself.

The list goes on and on, but you get the point. Every great investor gets one BIG IDEA they can continue to implement in various ways throughout their career.

I have been thinking about this concept for awhile now and it recently hit me that I had a single BIG IDEA that I have been chasing for years. Without realizing it, I have been trying to take one conclusion about the world and find as many ways to express the idea as possible.

So what is my one BIG IDEA? …. The government is never, ever going to stop printing money.

That is it. It really is that simple. The value in the idea is that it can be described in a single sentence, it has applicability anywhere in the world, and the investment universe related to the BIG IDEA can handle infinite capital demand.

Everyone can participate in the trade at whatever scale they want.

If the government never stops printing money, bitcoin is going to millions of dollars. Gold will keep accelerating towards $10,000 an ounce. Stocks will fly higher and higher. Cash and bonds will be a losing trade for long-term holders. And any dollar-denominated asset class, from real estate to art to sports cards, are going to be worth more in the future.

The key is to find the assets that are most sensitivity to global liquidity and/or the assets that benefit most from currency debasement. There are different applications of the idea in different geographies, different asset classes, and different industries.

I am sure there are plenty of other people who have their own BIG IDEA to pursue, but this one is mine. The government will never stop printing money. Get long and get loud. Hold the assets that will benefit from currency debasement, rather than take the debasement on the chin.

At the age of 37, I hopefully have another 40 years to spend every waking moment trying to find different ways to express this single BIG IDEA over and over again.
