MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Blewett, together with members of the company’s executive committee, on Friday laid a wreath at Jubilee House in memory of the eight people who lost their lives in Wednesday’s tragic Ghana Air Force helicopter crash.
The solemn ceremony formed part of a national outpouring of grief following the crash of a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter near Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.
The aircraft was en route from Accra to Obuasi for an official engagement on illegal mining when it went off radar and later crashed, killing all on board.
The victims have been identified as Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology; Limuna Mohammed Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Peter Bafemi Anala, Squadron Leader (crew); Manaen Kwabena Twum Ampadu, Flying Officer (crew); and Ernest Addo, Sergeant (crew).
Speaking after laying the wreath, Mr. Blewett described the moment as a deeply emotional one for the nation.
“It is a very sad day for Ghana. We are here as MTN and my executive committee to show respect to those who have passed. As the President said, this is a time for reflection on our lives and as a nation. Everyone should come together and think about the families and friends who have lost so much. It is also an opportunity for each of us to reflect on what is important in our own lives. Those who have departed are dear to us all and must remain in our hearts and minds forever,” he said.
Mr. Blewett also appealed to Ghanaians to handle discussions about the tragedy with compassion, particularly on social media, urging that online platforms be used to share messages of hope and solidarity rather than speculation or distressing content.
The wreath-laying at Jubilee House was attended by government officials, members of the security services, and representatives from various organisations who came together to honour the lives and service of the departed.
The crash, one of the deadliest in Ghana’s recent history, has prompted tributes from across the political divide, civil society, and international partners, all calling for unity and support for the bereaved families.
