MTN Ghana has launched the 2025 edition of its annual employee volunteer program, “21 Days of Y’ello Care,” under the theme “Connecting at the Root: Connecting Communities Through the Use of Digital Tools.”

This year’s theme addresses the ongoing issue of digital inequity affecting rural, remote, and marginalized communities. Over the next 21 days, MTN Ghana employee volunteers across all 16 regions will implement initiatives that leverage technology to bridge the digital divide. MTN volunteers will:

– Teach digital skills to young men and women
– Help small businesses establish an online presence
– Introduce farmers to mobile solutions
– Set up a smart farm in the Northern Region
– Support community ICT hubs by providing digital tools
– Set up a pottery shed for women in Torgome and educate them on Momo usage
– Sew uniforms for children in deprived communities

During the opening ceremony, the CEO of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, pointed out that while Ghana is making significant strides in technology and innovation, this progress is uneven. He stated, “While some young people are building startups and learning online, others are still walking miles to access a computer. Many rural women, farmers, and people with disabilities remain excluded from digital opportunities.”

He continued, “Our theme serves as a powerful reminder that true digital transformation doesn’t start in offices. It begins in communities, in the classroom, on the farm, at the market. It starts at the root.” The CEO encouraged MTN employee volunteers to unite during the 21 Days of Y’ello Care to make a positive impact.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Hon. Baba Issifu Seidu, the Minister commended MTN for its commitment to sustainable development. “MTN is not just connecting people; it is transforming communities and changing lives. This year’s focus on digital inclusion aligns with our national goals, and we commend MTN for being a true agent of change. From Heroes of Change to digital education, MTN is showing what sustainable leadership looks like,” he remarked.

The 21 Days of Y’ello Care program was launched in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi. In Accra, the program was attended by Mr. Stephen Dzelu, Technical Director at the Ministry of Climate Change and Sustainability, Y’ello Care partners, past beneficiaries of MTN Y’ello Care, and MTN employee volunteers. Y’ello Care is an annual employee volunteer program across the MTN Group, allowing staff to participate in community development projects in countries where MTN operates.

Since its inception in 2007, the initiative has significantly impacted the lives of millions of people and enriched hundreds of communities across the continent.
