Let's modernise and codify culture to strengthen governance – King Mswati III urges

The King of Eswatini, His Majesty Mswati III, has called for the modernisation and formal documentation of African cultures to reinforce their relevance in governance and public administration.

Speaking at a durbar of chiefs held in his honour at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the monarch stressed the importance of anchoring local laws and governance structures in traditional values rather than adopting externally imposed systems.

“By codifying our customs, we ensure they are recognised globally and serve as tools for good governance,” King Mswati III said.

He emphasised that Eswatini continues to strike a balance between preserving tradition and embracing modern progress. Drawing historical parallels, he noted the shared legacy between the peoples of Eswatini and Asanteman, particularly their resistance to colonial domination.

“The bravery and resilience of the Asantes in refusing to surrender the Golden Stool should echo the unyielding spirit of our people,” he added.

King Mswati praised the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s approach to governance, which integrates traditional leadership into modern administrative frameworks. He described this as a model worth emulating across Africa.

“The interspersion of traditional leadership into modern administration is a model of how culture can enhance effective governance, ensuring services reach our people while honouring our heritage,” he stated.

The durbar brought together several paramount chiefs from across the Ashanti Region in a colourful display of cultural solidarity.

Speaking on behalf of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Daasebre Otuo Serebour II, Paramount Chief of the Juaben Traditional Area, lauded the visit as a historic milestone in strengthening the bonds of kingship between Eswatini and Asanteman.

“May it pave the way for cultural, economic and spiritual exchanges that honour our past and build a better future,” Daasebre Otuo Serebour said.

He added that the visit should serve as a continental rallying call for unity, heritage preservation, and progressive development.

The durbar was also attended by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, who represented President John Dramani Mahama at the event.
