Helicopter Crash: Let their memories be a guiding light through national grief - Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to draw strength from the memories of the eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in the recent helicopter crash, describing them as a “guiding light” in this moment of national sorrow.

Speaking at the Evening of Reflections and Memorial for the eight victims, President Mahama urged the nation to look beyond despair and find hope in the legacy of those who perished.

“I pray that the cherished memories of these, our loved ones, will serve as a guiding light,” he said, “illuminating a path through the darkness and devastation of this national tragedy.”

The President, speaking with palpable grief, made it clear that he was not addressing the nation solely in his official capacity.

“I stand before you tonight additionally, and quite humbly, as a person who is also personally grieving the departed,” he said. “Each of the eight persons in that helicopter was either a friend, a cherished colleague, or a valued citizen of this country that I lead.”

The victims, who included government officials and professionals, were described by the President as not only public servants but also individuals whose impact extended well beyond their formal roles. Their loss, he said, is not just institutional it is deeply human.

Among the deceased are Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Murtala Mohammed.

Other victims include Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East; and Samuel Sarpong, a Vice Chairman of the NDC and a former Kumasi Mayor.

The crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
