The Government of Ghana has announced a shift in its strategy from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in the conflict-stricken Bawku area, following a recent upsurge in violence that threatens to undermine the fragile peace process.
A statement issued by the Presidency on Sunday, July 27, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order in Bawku and other affected areas. The deployment comes with intensified curfews as the government moves to safeguard public safety.
“We assure the public that the Ghana Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property,” the statement read.
The government’s decision follows a series of violent incidents that have threatened to derail mediation efforts led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, with the backing of the Nayiri and Zugraana. The statement acknowledged that the mediation process had brought the conflict close to resolution before the most recent killings reignited tensions.
“Government commends His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for mediating the conflict and appreciates all stakeholders who are supporting the peace process,” it stated.
While regretting the inconvenience the intensified military presence may pose to residents, especially peace-loving citizens, the government says the intervention is a necessary measure to protect the greater good. Authorities have urged all parties to desist from violence and cooperate fully with the security forces to ensure lasting peace.
Residents, including students, have been assured of their safety and security during this period of enforcement.
The Bawku chieftaincy conflict has remained one of Ghana’s most protracted ethnic and traditional disputes, often resulting in violent clashes and loss of lives. The government says it is now taking all necessary steps not only to contain the situation but to restore lasting peace and stability to the area.
