Gov’t releases $1m to avert Memphis University scholarship crisis

The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has disclosed that government has authorised the release of $1 million to help settle arrears owed to the University of Memphis in the United States.

The intervention comes amid growing concerns over the possible revocation of scholarships, evictions from accommodation, and potential deportation of Ghanaian students.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, the Registrar of the Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, sought to allay fears, assuring the public that proactive measures were being taken to safeguard the welfare of the affected students.

“We are making steady progress in addressing the matter concerning our students at the University of Memphis. I can confidently assure the public that no Ghanaian student will be deported,” he stated.

Mr Asafo-Agyei noted that a partial payment of $400,000 had already been made to the university, with an additional $1 million currently being processed.

He clarified that the full debt amounts to $3.6 million, but only $2.2 million remains outstanding due to ongoing audits.

“The funds are now with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department and will soon be transferred to the Bank of Ghana, then on to Washington for final payment,” he explained.
