Government dissolves National Cathedral Secretariat, ends state funding

The government has officially dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat, signalling a definitive end to state involvement in the ambitious project originally championed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The initiative, intended to serve as a national Christian worship centre and a lasting symbol of Ghana’s religious identity, has long been a subject of public debate and scrutiny.

The dissolution reflects a significant policy shift, aligning with the position consistently maintained by President John Dramani Mahama.

President Mahama has been vocal in his opposition to the use of public funds for the project, pledging that under his leadership, no additional taxpayer money would be allocated to the construction of the cathedral.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Tuesday, 8 April, the Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the government would not inject any further resources into the now-abandoned project.

“There are outstanding issues regarding procurement processes and payments being demanded by the contractor, but no one will take responsibility now because there is no National Cathedral,” a government official remarked.

“It remains a worthless structure. What is certain is that President Mahama will not invest GH¢400 million of taxpayers’ money into that project.”
