Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Toyota Tsusho Corporation (TTC) to strengthen collaboration in the country’s automotive sector, with a focus on advancing green mobility and industrial growth.

The agreement, signed by Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, on the sidelines of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), will promote environmentally friendly vehicles, beginning with Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). The move forms part of Ghana’s strategy to support green mobility and reduce carbon emissions under a multi-pathway approach.

“This milestone demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to becoming a competitive hub for automotive assembly and green innovation in Africa,” Ofosu-Adjare said. “It also deepens our trade and investment ties with Japan.”

Beyond vehicle promotion, the MoU includes provisions for human resource development through technical training and knowledge transfer. It also raises the prospect of establishing a Toyota Academy in Ghana to build local skills and expertise.

The agreement potentially could expand Ghana’s automotive market while supporting the broader national industrialization agenda. The partnership adds momentum to the government’s efforts to position the country as a preferred destination for automotive assembly and sustainable industrial development.

The collaboration with Toyota Tsusho is the latest in a series of initiatives by Ghana to attract investment into green technology, while contributing to global climate goals.
