Ghana has confirmed the deaths of several senior government officials in yesterday’s military helicopter crash within the Ashanti Region.
Defence Minister and Chief of Staff, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, publicly identified the deceased, marking a profound national tragedy. The officials lost include Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and Mr. Samuel Aboagye.
The Ghana Armed Forces Z9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, vanished from radar during its flight from Accra to Obuasi. Initial local media reports indicated the aircraft crashed into trees and caught fire. Dr. Boamah also named the fallen military personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi, Flying Officer Mannin Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Addo Mensah.

In his somber announcement, Dr. Boamah expressed the government’s deepest condolences and extended sympathies to the grieving families of all victims. The scale of the loss, encompassing key government figures and dedicated military personnel, has sent shockwaves across the nation. Search and recovery efforts at the crash site continue as authorities work to determine the cause of the accident.
President John Mahama has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased. This gesture signifies a period of official mourning for the lives tragically cut short. The incident represents one of the most significant losses of government officials in recent Ghanaian history, leaving the nation in collective grief.
