The Ghana Armed Forces launched a major cordon-and-search operation in Bawku on August 1, 2025, targeting armed groups and illegal weapons following renewed violence that killed three students.
Taskforce Commander Colonel Rosslyn Foli Atiogbe led the intelligence-driven mission alongside Lieutenant Colonel Kakra Sasu-Antwi and senior officers, focusing on suspected criminal hideouts linked to recent attacks.

Deploying over 200 personnel in Bawku and an additional 200 across the Upper East Region, the military aims to restore order through intensified patrols. The operation responds directly to escalating conflict, including the fatal shooting of high school students that heightened security concerns.
During a July 30 visit, Chief of Army Staff Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu praised troops’ professionalism and pledged unwavering support for peace efforts. “We will not leave any stone unturned to restore calm,” he stated, emphasizing strict adherence to human rights protocols while prioritizing civilian safety.
