Ghana-linked Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro signs contract extension at AZ Alkmaar until 2030

Dutch-born goalkeeper of Ghanaian descent, Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro, has signed a new contract extension at AZ Alkmaar.

The 21-year-old pens a new long-term deal at the Eredivisie side, which will see him stay with AZ until the summer of 2030.

The goalkeeper has been with the club since age 10, rising through the youth ranks before eventually making the senior team. He was part of the youth side that won the UEFA Youth Champions League two years ago.

Owusu-Oduro was promoted to the senior team ahead of the 2023/24 season and has stayed with them since then, eventually becoming the first-choice goalkeeper.

Last season, he played 46 games across all competitions, including his heroics in the semi-final of the KNVB Cup, which sent his side to the final.

“You don’t do that every year. It’s a beautiful moment, not only for me, but also for the club. That we did this together again. You see the plan that AZ has; AZ has confidence in me, and I have confidence in AZ,” Owusu-Oduro said after signing his new deal.

“Then it is not difficult to say ‘yes’. I have played at high levels, and it has been very good to do that at a young age.”

Owusu-Oduro has been the subject of talks between his entourage and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), with the latter willing to add the goalkeeper to the national team ranks.

Earlier this year, the goalkeeper admitted that playing for the Ghana national team is not a priority at the moment as he is focused on Jong Oranje which is the junior team of the Netherlands national team.

He has been a key feature for the youth side of the Netherlands national team.
