Ghana’s Foreign Ministry has defended its abstention from a UN Human Rights Council vote extending protections against LGBTQI discrimination, stressing the move reflects constitutional and cultural values not endorsement of same-sex rights.

In a July 9 statement, the ministry cited Chapter 5, Article 17 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution prohibiting discrimination while affirming the state’s view of gender as strictly binary.

Ghana’s UN Permanent Representative reiterated commitment to shielding individuals from violence but opposed legal recognition of LGBTQI rights.

Despite Ghana’s abstention, the resolution passed, renewing the Independent Expert’s mandate to report annually on global discrimination. The ministry cautioned media against misrepresenting Ghana’s position as supportive of LGBTQI rights.
