Former Deputy Finance Minister Dr Alex Ampaabeng backs Kennedy Agyapong to lead NPP

Former Deputy Minister for Finance, Dr Alex Ampaabeng, has openly declared his support for Kennedy Agyapong in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for 31 January 2026.

His endorsement comes at a critical time as the party prepares to elect a new flagbearer ahead of the December 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Dr Ampaabeng explained that his decision to back the Assin Central MP was grounded in the sentiments of the grassroots and not motivated by personal gain or betrayal.

“To me, whatever decision I am making is nothing based on betrayal. It is based on the information I have received on the grounds that the people out there who sent me to have the opportunity, do believe that, bring this person, and we will give you the power.

Dr Ampaabeng emphasised that his allegiance to the NPP remains unshaken, but he believes Kennedy Agyapong represents the change and leadership that the party and country currently need.

He added that his engagement with party members and ordinary Ghanaians across the country revealed a strong desire for bold, decisive leadership, which he believes Agyapong embodies.

The Deputy Minister likened Kennedy Agyapong to America’s Donald Trump and Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi as business people who have shown clear results in political leadership, expressing confidence that, as a successful businessman, Mr Agyapong can turn around the fortunes of the country and create jobs for the country’s growing young population.

“And I think that the time is right. Kennedy is the right candidate. Youth unemployment is a big problem, and so far, people in business have demonstrated that they can do well. Berlusconi was one of them. He became one of the successful in Italy, coming over three times. We have Donald Trump. We have Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand. He [Kennedy Agyapong] is the Berlusconi, the Donald Trump, Thaksin that we have in Ghana, and I do believe that he has the answer to Ghana’s unemployment problem”.

“It has nothing to do with the betrayal of Dr Bawumia”, he emphasised.
