The family of the late Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has opened a Book of Condolence at his residence in Tema to honour his memory and service to the nation.

Just a day after his sudden passing, scores of mourners — including friends, party faithful, and loved ones — have been visiting his home since the early hours of Monday, 8 July 2025, to pay their respects.

The atmosphere at the residence has been deeply sombre, with wailing and solemn hymns echoing throughout as tributes continue to pour in for the charismatic legislator.

Ernest Kumi died on Sunday following a sudden cardiac arrest at the Lister Hospital in Airport Hills, Accra. His body has since been transferred to the Lashibi Funeral Home.

Throughout the day, prominent figures from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, are expected to visit the residence to console the bereaved family.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the former District Chief Executive of Denkyembour, Seth Birikorang Ofosu, described the overwhelming show of support as comforting in such a difficult time.

“Today is dedicated to welcoming sympathisers, loved ones, and party executives. We are deeply overwhelmed,” he said.

The late Ernest Kumi is survived by his wife and three young children, aged 13, 10, and 7 — two boys and a girl. According to Mr Ofosu, the children were only informed of their father’s passing on Monday morning.

“We couldn’t break the news to them yesterday. We told them this morning, and it was unbearable,” he said.

Widely referred to as the “Starboy of Akwatia,” Mr Kumi was celebrated for his dedication to his constituents and his engaging, energetic spirit.
