Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has directed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to immediately deploy 200 new transformers across key urban centers.
The directive, announced during the opening of the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra, marks a strategic effort to bolster transmission capacity and meet rising industrial and residential energy demand amid intermittent power outages in recent weeks.

“In this regard, I have granted approval to the ECG to, as a matter of urgency, inject about 200 new transformers in our major capital cities. This is to ensure that we do not just generate power, but we’re able to transmit power and distribute that to consumers in an effective and efficient manner.” Jinapor stated.

The Minister reassured stakeholders that Ghana’s overall power generation capacity remains robust, with excess supply enabling exports to neighbouring countries. He framed the transformer deployment as a necessary investment to complement generation stability with distribution efficiency.
“I’m happy to note that despite the challenges we inherited, the recent report I got is that recent power generation has been stable, and we have even begun exporting some power. What we need to do is to continue to improve the transmission network and the distribution network.” Jinapor said.

The intervention comes at a time when reliable electricity supply is increasingly critical to Ghana’s economic ambitions, particularly for the mining and industrial sectors which form the backbone of job creation and export earnings.
Industry players at WAMPEX welcomed the announcement, citing the importance of dependable energy infrastructure for operational continuity, competitiveness, and long-term investment planning.
With the deployment of the new transformers, the government signals its commitment to strengthening the national grid while positioning Ghana as a stable power hub in West Africa. The Energy Ministry’s action is also expected to boost public confidence and provide relief to consumers impacted by recent load management measures.
