Death and the King’s Horseman: Andrew Adote gears up for his toughest stage challenge yet

Ghanaian stage actor and voice-over artist, Andrew Tandoh-Adote is preparing for what he describes as his most demanding role to date: starring in Death and the King’s Horseman, a play by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.

The production, directed by George Quaye, will open on Saturday 23rd August, 2025 at the National Theatre in Accra, with evening performances at 4 pm and 8 pm. Additional shows will take place on 24th, 30th and 31st August, 2025.

It is a collaboration between the National Theatre, Image Bureau and April Communications, with sponsorship from Stanbic Bank, Bills Savings & Loans, The Luckiest and MTN.

Speaking on PrimeTime with George Quaye on Joy Prime, Tandoh-Adote reflected on his career and the challenges he has faced in both acting and hosting. He admitted that hosting was initially difficult, but after a year, he has found his rhythm. He emphasised that passion remains the driving force behind his work.

He recalled his long-standing relationship with Uncle Ebo Whyte’s Roverman Productions, where he has delivered standout performances in several plays. He named The Gods Are Not to Blame as his most challenging role so far, while also fondly remembering his time in A Detective Calls.

Tandoh-Adote described Death and the King’s Horseman as the toughest production he has ever prepared for, requiring immense dedication and effort. He promised audiences a powerful and moving performance.

Director George Quaye praised Soyinka’s work as a profound exploration of duty, tradition and cultural identity. He said the staging will feature top-tier acting, inventive set design, and high-quality lighting and sound, offering audiences more than entertainment but also a deep cultural experience.

Under a memorandum of understanding with the National Theatre, the venue will host the performances and lead publicity efforts, with support from its resident theatre groups to ensure wide reach and impact.
