The Hohoe Circuit Court has sentenced Courage Nyansah, a motorcycle rider, to a sum of GH¢3,600 for making excessive noise with is bike, riding without a licence and use of unregistered motorcycle.
He pleaded guilty to all the charges which also include use of motorcycle without protective crash helmet, insurance as well as the fitting of unsuitable motorcycle parts.
Nyansah was sentenced on his own plea and would serve eight months in prison if he defaults in payment of the fine.
Prior the sentencing, Chief Inspector Charles Aziati, Prosecuting, told the Court presided over by Mr Lambert Y. Keriba, that the rate at which the unlicensed riders were using unregistered motorbikes to make noise and knocking down pedestrians in the Municipality, was alarming.
He prayed the Court to give the convict a severe punishment to serve as a deterrent to others.
Chief Inspector Aziati said the Volta North Regional Police Command in Hohoe had for some time now, been receiving persistent complaints from the public that some motorcycle riders had removed the silencer in their exhaust pipes and make excessive noise with it when riding, especially during the night and on weekends, thereby disturbing the public peace.
He said on July 12, 2025, at about 02:17 hours, personnel of the Volta North Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) of the Ghana Police Service, Hohoe, received information from the public that a certain rider with an unregistered motorcycle was engaging in such an act.
Chief Inspector Aziati said upon receipt of the information, the personnel proceeded to the scene and met the convict in charge of an unregistered “Royal” motorcycle, without wearing a protective crash helmet and a pillion rider on board riding and raising the front tyre of the motorcycle and making excessive noise with the exhaust.
He said the motorcycle was taken from the convict and brought to the police station and later, the convict was arrested.
Chief Inspector Aziati said during the investigation, it was found out that the convict had removed the manufacturer’s headlamp and fixed an unapproved LED headlamp, which normally blurred the sight of other motorists on the road and mostly cause accidents.
He said it was further found that the convict had removed the silencer from the exhaust and was using the motorcycle to make excessive noise in town.
Chief Inspector Aziati said the motorcycle did not also have insurance and road use certificate respectively adding that the convict did not also have a rider’s licence.
He is to pay the amount or in default serve some months in jail.
