Assault on Journalists: GJA backs presidency’s condemnation, urges action

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has welcomed President Mahama’s condemnation of the assault on JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony, describing it as a positive step while emphasising the need for concrete measures.

The GJA stresses that while the statement is commendable, it must be backed by decisive action to protect press freedom in Ghana.

Speaking during a press conference, Albert Dwumfour, President of the association, said, “ GJA takes note of the statement issued by the Office of the President condemning the state of attacks on journalists.”

He added, “The GJA appreciates the President’s public stance on this critical matter and acknowledges the recognition of journalists as key actors in Ghana’s democratic space.”

Despite welcoming the statement as a significant symbolic gesture, Mr Dwumfour urged the government to do more.

“We urge the presidency and the government as a whole to match words with decisive action,” he stressed.

“Ghana’s international standing as a beacon of democracy is at risk if those who attack journalists with impunity continue to go unpunished or are shielded by institutional silence,” he stated.

He called on the government to “direct all security agencies to act promptly on reported cases of abuse against media personnel.”

Mr Dwumfour also emphasised the need to “introduce clear policy measures and training protocols to ensure state actors understand and uphold media rights.”

He insisted the government must “publicly support prosecutions and disciplinary actions against those who violate press freedom, regardless of rank or political affiliation.”
