Asiedu Nketiah: NDC not considering Mahama for a third presidential bid

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has rejected claims that the party intends to present President John Dramani Mahama for a third term, reaffirming the NDC’s commitment to Ghana’s constitutional provisions.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Tuesday, August 26, he emphasised that the NDC has always respected the law and will continue to uphold the two-term presidential limit.

“We have never run our party in ways that conflict with the national constitution, and we don’t intend to do that,” Mr Asiedu Nketiah said. “We will stick by the tenets of the Constitution.”

His comments come amid growing speculation over who will succeed President Mahama when his current term ends in 2029.

Responding to questions about his own presidential ambitions, the NDC Chairman cautioned against premature declarations, noting that such discussions could distract the government from its agenda.

“The party has not declared anything,” he explained. “I keep repeating my caution that we have to be very careful about the way we express our ambitions. Whoever succeeds President Mahama will ride on the achievements of the current government.”

Mr Asiedu Nketiah further cautioned party members against early jostling for succession, warning that it could weaken the administration and affect the NDC’s future prospects.

“If you conduct yourself in ways that will disrupt the activities of this government in ways that will make the government less successful, then you have a bigger problem,” he noted.

“President Mahama is only about eight months in office now, and you want to struggle to decide who will replace him—you know what it can cause.”
