The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council has announced a series of urgent security measures following the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase, at Asewaase on Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

In a press statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, the Council extended its condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Kusaase, describing the incident as tragic and deeply regrettable.

The statement confirmed that the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, 23 July 2025 to assess the security situation and determine immediate interventions aimed at restoring calm and preventing further unrest.

Following the meeting, REGSEC resolved to implement the following measures with immediate effect:

  1. A curfew on motorbike movement after 7:00pm daily until further notice.
  2. A ban on the use of unlicensed motorbikes and those without functioning headlights.
  3. The suspension of all inter-tribal football competitions across the region until further notice.
  4. A restriction on the wearing of smocks by motorbike riders, as it has reportedly become a method for concealing weapons.

Additionally, REGSEC has deployed increased security forces—comprising both police and military personnel—to identified hotspot areas to safeguard lives and property.

“These measures are necessary to maintain peace and ensure justice is served,” the statement read. “The Ashanti REGSEC remains committed to protecting the public and enforcing law and order.”

The Council has assured the public of the government’s resolve to track down and bring the perpetrators of the killing to justice. Security services are actively investigating the incident and have appealed to the general public to support the process by providing credible information.

“We urge all residents to cooperate fully with the security services and share any relevant information to aid the investigation,” the statement read.

“Our doors remain open to the public, and we are determined to get to the bottom of this heinous act.”

The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council reaffirmed its commitment to peace, development, and security across the region, emphasising that it will not relent in its efforts to deter acts of violence and criminality.

Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the region, with several traditional and community leaders calling for calm and unity in these trying times.
