A special anti-robbery operation carried out by the Ashanti Central Regional Police Command has resulted in the death of one suspect, with nine others arrested in connection with a string of violent residential robberies across parts of Kumasi.
The operation, which took place last Friday, June 27, was conducted by the Regional Intelligence Department in collaboration with the KNUST Police District.
It targeted suspects believed to be involved in robberies in areas including Abuakwa, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Denchemuoso, and Apiadu.
During a media briefing, Regional Police Commander Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe confirmed that a suspect was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with officers.
Another suspect, identified as Bernard Owusu Ansah, also known as “Hot Boy,” sustained gunshot wounds and is currently under 24-hour police guard at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
DCOP Teye-Cudjoe stated that the operation, launched around 11:30 a.m., led to the arrest of 10 suspects. The individuals currently in custody include:
Kwadwo Kyei Baffuor, 39, Joseph Oppong, alias Joe, 30, Bernard Owusu Ansah, alias Hot Boy 27, Kwadwo Konadu 28, James Asare Boateng, 26, Emmanuel Asiedu, 27, Maxwell Gyimah, 30 Kelvin Adomako, alias Chemical, 29 and Daniel Dwumor, 46.
Two of the suspects were apprehended later at Ejisu-Hwereso and Bantama.
Police are still searching for one more individual, identified as Yahaya Nuhu, who is currently on the run.
Authorities also recovered a cache of items from the suspects’ hideouts, including three vehicles, several firearms including pistols, pump-action and double-barrel shotguns, some loaded with live rounds as well as laptop computers, mobile phones, various ID cards, wristwatches, an internet router, and face masks.
“The suspects are in lawful custody and will be arraigned before court in the coming days,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe said. He also appealed to the public to support ongoing crime-fighting efforts by sharing credible information with the police.
The police say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public of their commitment to restoring safety and security across the region.
