“I won’t leave tomorrow’s meeting without securing a drop in the pricing of DSTV. That is a solemn promise I make to you.” This is the Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, pledging to ensure that he gets a deal for Ghanaians with Multichoice.

This means subscribers of DSTV in the country could soon enjoy relief from soaring pay-TV costs following this firm commitment by the Minister

Sam George was speaking at a press briefing on Thursday ahead of a crucial meeting with the executives of Multichoice, the operators of DSTV.  The Minister assured the public that he will not leave Friday’s critical meeting with DSTV’s top management without achieving a tangible outcome, which is lower prices for subscribers.

The Minister revealed that he has invited both the Ghanaian leadership of MultiChoice and their counterparts from South Africa for high-level talks aimed at addressing mounting public concerns over DSTV’s pricing regime. The discussions, according to the Minister, are centred on issues of affordability, fairness, and value for money, which are key concerns that have persisted among Ghanaian subscribers.

The commitment comes at a time when many households continue to struggle with high living costs, making the rising cost of digital services such as DSTV particularly burdensome.

In recent months, consumer outcry over subscription price hikes has grown louder, with many demanding that service providers tailor their pricing models to reflect the current economic realities in the country.

The Minister emphasized that the government expects DSTV’s pricing structure to be “responsive to Ghana’s economic context,” adding that this engagement is part of a broader agenda to ensure that digital services in Ghana remain fair, accessible, and accountable to the people.

Despite tomorrow being a public holiday, the Minister affirmed his dedication to the cause, saying: “I have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, even though it’s a public holiday, with the Ghana team and their South African counterparts… they arrived tonight to agree on a way forward on the issues raised.”

He added that the outcomes of the meeting would be shared with the public in due course, highlighting the government’s commitment to regulatory accountability and consumer protection.

The Minister’s assurance has sparked widespread optimism, with many industry observers and subscribers commending the government’s proactive approach. Should the Minister succeed, it would mark a significant victory for consumer advocacy and could set a precedent for pricing negotiations with other multinational service providers operating in Ghana.
