We’re in an interesting time where the only pony car left to buy new is the Ford Mustang, apart from the newly released Dodge Charger Sixpack. Of course, such a selection isn’t all that bad considering the long lineage and muscle car expectations that you get out of a new Mustang. However, the Mustang seems to be struggling to increase sales numbers, but as it sits, the Mustang is mostly a lone soldier with the goods to hold strong to its prided position.

For the 2025 model year, the Ford Mustang continues its redesign from 2024. Having already experienced the new Ford Mustang, there’s a lot to appreciate about America’s longstanding pony car that doesn’t necessarily depart far from the previous generation. With that, there’s a lot that carries over and is only ‘polished’ in the sense of performance. However, with the EcoBoost turbocharged 4-cylinder variation, which I have in for review this week in a convertible form, there’s not a lot you can argue with as one of the rare convertibles that you can buy today for a reasonable price.

Under the long hood, you get a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a 10-speed automatic transmission (6-speed manual is only available for the 5.0-liter V8) out to the rear wheels for somewhat of a thrilling experience for those who happen to find such a vehicle in their rental fleet and have never driven anything north of 300 horsepower. Yes, a lot about the Mustang convertible screams rental car, which can be a good thing and a bad thing.

Performance is good, even though the 10-speed automatic transmission feels lumpy and can be a mixed case for the midrange. There’s even an unexpected surge of power out of the Mustang EcoBoost at times, where its somewhat inconsistent power delivery finds a second wind – it’s possible that this is due to the 10-speed automatic transmission’s indecisiveness at times. You’ll notice those gear shifts, too – as the optional active exhaust audibly lets you know with its selectable sound modes, which at times doesn’t sound all that bad for a turbocharged 4-cylinder, other than the drone at certain RPMS when it is in the loudest track mode. Otherwise, the active exhaust seems to help emulate the sound of a tractor in some settings when idle.

Fuel economy is pretty decent for a muscle car coming in as high as 33 mpg on the highway for the EPA estimate. 22 mpg city and 26 mpg combined are the other EPA figures, which you will expect to get in the real world under normal speed-limit-obeying conditions.

Convertible vehicles like the Mustang are often expected to lose some rigidity when compared to their coupe counterparts. Here, there’s no difference as the Mustang EcoBoost Convertible has quite a bit of cowl shake and tends to upset the ride quality to the point that it just feels uneasy when you’re on a road with broken pavement. The suspension with its fixed-rate dampers does well to smooth out the ride, but the body movements of the convertible make things rather rough and unsettling, which is probably the biggest disappointment of my week with the Mustang EcoBoost Convertible. Otherwise, it’s ‘cool’ to have an affordable convertible on the market with some sporty style and the eye-popping Grabber Blue color of my test vehicle.

The interior, mimicking other new Mustangs, has a lot to offer in terms of having an advanced infotainment system fed through a large 13.4-inch touchscreen and a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, which are all standard equipment for the new Mustang across all trims. Having the top-level Premium trim for the EcoBoost variation adds a few more desirable features, such as ventilated front seats, color-selectable LED ambient interior lighting, and upgraded upholstery. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrate well in the latest infotainment system where there are different configurations for the display and a full screen of either smartphone integration.

Ford’s quest to be the go-to for a pony car will hopefully pay off, as there’s nothing else like a Mustang on the market right now that you can get a drop top, one that starts at $40K to boot. Opting for the new Mustang EcoBoost Convertible Premium will cost a bit more as there are a few add-on options on my test vehicle, such as the $3,000 equipment group 201A package (includes Co-Pilot360 Assist+ safety system, 1-year connected navigation, premier trim w/color accent), a $1,225 active exhaust system, $1,450 20-inch wheel option, carpet floor mats, B&O sound system, and the Grabber Blue metallic paint, coming to a price of $51,905.
