A tragic road accident involving a fuel tanker and a Ford Transit mini-bus has claimed the lives of 17 people on the outskirts of Juaso in the Asante-Akim South Municipality.
The accident, which occurred around 1500 hours on Monday, left almost all passengers on board the mini-bus dead, with a few survivors rushed to the Juaso Government Hospital for treatment.
The victims were members of the Saviour Church, returning to Obogu after participating in a church programme at Osiem in the Eastern Region.
News of the fatal crash sparked panic and grief in Obogu, prompting hundreds of residents to rush to the hospital to verify whether their relatives were among the deceased.
Some eyewitnesses who spoke with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the fuel tanker with registration number GT 1674-17, was travelling towards Accra when it attempted to overtake another vehicle.
In a bid to avoid a collision, the driver of the Ford Transit swerved onto the shoulder of the road.
However, the tanker also veered off the road and crashed into the mini-bus, completely dismantling it.
The impact of the collision resulted in the instant death of nearly all the passengers aboard the mini-bus.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service responded swiftly to the scene to manage traffic and assist with rescue efforts.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Steward Hospital morgue at Yawkwei for preservation and autopsy.
