Kumasi based popular broadcaster and host of Abusua Nkommo on Abusua FM, Prince Kojo Marfo, has urged driver unions in the Ashanti Region to stage a peaceful demonstration against what he describes as widespread extortion and harassment by officers of the Ashanti Regional Police Commands.
Speaking on his morning show, Kojo Marfo said commercial drivers endure daily intimidation and unfair demands for money at various police checkpoints.
He stressed that the situation has become unbearable and requires collective action from transport unions.
“Driver unions should take a day off work and demonstrate against the Ashanti Police Command for extortion and harassment on the road,” he stated.
According to him, many drivers complain that their earnings are being eroded by illegal demands from some officers, yet their concerns are often ignored.
Kojo Marfo popular known as “Corruption” who is fighting agaisnt police alleged extortion argued that a coordinated day of protest would send a strong message to authorities and push for reforms in the way traffic regulations are enforced.
The call has sparked conversations among transport leaders in Kumasi, with some union executives indicating they will consult members to determine the next steps.
Listeners of Abusua FM who are concern about the police extortion and daily commercial transport operators harassment by the police admit when the drivers strike it affect human movement, however, they support the protest.
One Nana Adutwum who phone into the radio programme said” something i feel like vomiting when i see the police demanding money from drivers as if its their birth right. I think the Interior minister must be put in the know of the development in kumasi” he said.
