…Warns against indiscipline

The Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has reiterated the Mahama government’s unwavering support for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), assuring personnel of improved welfare, enhanced operational capacity, and a modernised military structure that reflects the nation’s security priorities.

Addressing a spirited All Ranks Durbar with officers, soldiers, and Defence Civilian Staff of Garrisons 1 and 5 at Burma Camp on Wednesday, Dr Boamah praised the troops for their bravery, professionalism and commitment to national service.

He, however, issued a stern warning to those who may fall short of the high standards expected of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). “I urge you to deal ruthlessly with the few within your ranks who have deviated or may deviate from the professionalism required of you,” he stated, adding that integrity and discipline remain the bedrock of the military.

Dr Boamah condemned recent acts of violence in Bawku, including the destruction of a revered statue and the shooting of two soldiers. He assured the troops that the government would reconstruct the vandalised monument and called for appropriate sanctions against those responsible.

The Minister also expressed concern over reports of some personnel offering unauthorised private security services. He described the practice as illegal and called on the Military High Command to take swift action to eradicate the phenomenon.

In a gesture to encourage professionalism and integrity, Dr Boamah made a personal donation of GH¢10,000 to a soldier who refused a bribe while engaged in anti-galamsey operations. The soldier, he revealed, had also been promoted by the Chief of the Defence Staff.

Quoting the Armed Forces’ Honour Code, Dr Boamah reminded the troops of their solemn duty:

“The safety, honour, and welfare of your country come first… The honour, welfare, and comfort of the men you command come next… Your own ease, comfort, and safety come last.”

He pledged to leave behind a modernised, expanded, and responsive military—one with better morale and living conditions than ever before.

As part of the broader “Reset Ghana” agenda, the Minister outlined key initiatives aimed at transforming the armed forces:

Enhanced Operational Capacity: Improved responsiveness to emerging security threats.

Improved Troop Welfare: A more conducive work environment and competitive benefit packages.

Strategic Partnerships: Strengthened global collaborations for increased military capability.

He further highlighted the government’s commitment to:

Quality Healthcare: Including access to top-tier medical services under the Mahama Cares Initiative.

Fair Compensation: Regular and equitable salary reviews ensure a transparent and equitable compensation process.

Infrastructure Development: Construction of 10,000 housing units and upgrading of logistics and barracks.

Professional Growth: Expanded training and development opportunities.

Dr Boamah concluded by urging all service personnel to remain united in serving the Republic. “Let us stand together for a stronger, more secure Ghana,” he declared.
