Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid courtesy visits to former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, and the NPP parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie, following violent incidents during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Announcing the visit on her social media page, Hawa Koomson stated that Dr Bawumia and his team stopped by her residence to check on her condition after what she described as a “brutal assault by thugs.”

“My family and I are extremely grateful for this thoughtful gesture,” she wrote, sharing photos from the visit.

Nana Akua Afriyie also received Dr Bawumia and his team, who expressed solidarity and urged party unity amid rising tensions in the constituency.

The Ablekuma North rerun has been marked by heightened tensions and isolated incidents of violence. According to eyewitness accounts and social media footage, Hawa Koomson was allegedly attacked by unidentified men believed to be affiliated with opposing party groups.

Details surrounding the assaults remain unclear, but they have drawn widespread condemnation from civil society organisations and political observers, who have voiced concerns over growing political violence and threats to democratic processes.

Dr Bawumia’s visits are viewed as a strong show of support and a reaffirmation of the need for peaceful and secure electoral environments.

Meanwhile, Civil Society Organisations have called on security agencies to intensify investigations into the violence recorded at Ablekuma North and to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other media advocacy groups have also renewed calls for stronger protections for journalists on the ground, describing recent attacks as an affront to press freedom and democratic accountability.
